Packaging materials are one of the most important items that you must have at home. Not only are they important for the transportation of the items to different cities, house relocation, etc but they also prove to be an important asset for the safekeeping of various items which are fragile in nature or items which require more safety even from temperature changes, dust, dirt, etc. These packaging materials are made from different kinds of materials and therefore serve different purposes too. Here in this article, we will be talking about a few traditional packaging materials and also additionally we will also talk about the modern-day sustainable packaging materials which are widely being used.

Traditional Packaging Materials

1. Plastic

Plastic was one of the most widely used packaging materials in the e- commerce industry. Not only is it the most easily available, most convenient and a trusted packaging material but also it is durable, strong and able to take a huge amount of load. To add on to these benefits, plastic packaging materials such as plastic carrier bags are waterproof too. Plastic packaging comes in various forms, including:

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)– This kind of plastic is mostly made to be used for making bottles, different types of containers, and various other kinds of containers which require transparency.

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)– This plastic is highly resistant to chemicals and does not react easily with harsh chemicals too at times. It is therefore used for making products such as milk jugs, detergent bottles, and plastic bags also as the chemical composition of the plastic as well as of the material contained remains unchanged.

Although plastic has extensive usage still, it has been banned by a number of governments across the globe owing to the fact that they remain on the earth’s crust for millions of years and this in return is degrading the environment that we live in. Therefore, these days the scientists have come up with various substitutes for plastics which we will be discussing further in the sustainable packaging materials section.

2. Paper and Cardboard

Paper and cardboard are one of the most important packaging materials in the packaging industry as it is lightweight and versatile in nature. Moreover, it can be moulded into different shapes and depending on your requirements, you can get different shapes and sizes ordered. They are quite sustainable in nature as the are made from recycle paper and wood which does not cause any threat to the environment. Removal boxes and wardrobe boxes are extensively used for various purposes and often any shipping is considered to be incomplete if the cardboard removal boxes are not added as safety measure for the protection of the materials placed inside.

Sustainable Packaging Materials

Although traditionally various kinds of packaging materials were being used and the world was unaware of the ill effects that those packaging materials were leaving on the earth. Therefore today, most of the countries of the world have banned such materials from being used which are posing any kind of threat to the environment and as a result we are switching to the sustainable and eco- friendly alternatives these days which we will be discussing in the next paragraph.

1. Biodegradable Plastics

Packaging materials which are competent enough with the plastic named as bio- plastics and are designed in such a way that they break down quite quickly in comparison to the traditional plastics when exposed to microorganisms. These plastics are usually made from renewable resources such as cornstarch, sugarcane, etc. The types of these bio- plastics include:

Polylactic Acid (PLA)- This bio- plastic is used for the packaging of edible items, cutlery meant to be disposed after use, etc. PLA is considered to be a compostable plastic under industrial conditions and is therefore allowed by various governments.

2. Recycled Paper and Cardboard

1Recycled paper and cardboards are made from materials which materials which are already being used and are recycled again and again to get the maximum out of the materials. This is the most eco- friendly way to get things done and also save the environment at the same time. These days various kinds of packaging materials which are made from recycled paper are being made such as newspaper offcuts, these offcuts act as cushions when placed around any fragile material and thereby save them from any jerk or mishandling.
